OUR PROCESS

1. Initial consultation: Meet our fertility specialist at an initial consultation
2. Pre-cycle evaluation: Initial diagnostic testing includes hormone testing, infection screening, hysterosalpingogram (evaluation of the uterus and fallopian tubes) and semen analysis. Based on the results of the initial evaluations, a range of procedures are offered by the IVF Centre managed by Bourn Hall Fertility Centre which includes:

OVARIAN STIMULATION

Women generally produce one mature egg per month. There are women who have problems with this process and thus they are diagnosed with ovulatory dysfunction. There are three levels of treatment depending on the individual’s situation:

  • Level 1: Ovulation induction with oral medication such as clomiphene or letrozole
  • Level 1: Ovulation induction with oral medication such as clomiphene or letrozole
  • Level 2: Ovulation induction with injectable Gonadotropins (Gonal F, Puregon etc.) with intercourse or intrauterine insemination
  • Level 3: In vitro fertilisation (IVF) and embryo transfer

INTRAUTERINE INSEMINATION (IUI)

IUI is a fertility procedure in which sperm are washed, concentrated and injected directly into a woman’s uterus. In natural intercourse, only a fraction of the sperm makes it to the woman’s genital tract. IUI increases the number of sperm in the fallopian tubes, where fertilisation takes place.

Studies show the IUI will not be effective in cases where the male has a very low sperm count or poor sperm shape (morphology), or poor sperm motility or unexplained infertility

IN VITRO FERTILISATION (IVF)

IVF is indicated in cases where there are:

  • Blocked fallopian tubes or pelvic adhesions
  • Failed cycles (2-3) of ovarian stimulation with intrauterine insemination
  • Advanced female age of more than 38 years
  • Reduced ovarian reserve
  • Severe endometriosis
  • Male factors: low sperm counts, increased abnormal sperm, low sperm motility
  • Genetic disorder in family
  • Recent miscarriage

The IVF procedure is based on a six-step process:

  • Preparation for treatment: detailed history to individualised treatment protocol (required testing)
  • Ovulation induction: stimulation of the ovaries in order to produce more than the one mature egg that occurs in a natural cycle
  • Egg retrieval: removal of the eggs by an ultrasound guided needle aspiration
  • Fertilisation: the sperm are introduced into the eggs resulting in fertilisation. ICSI–intra cytoplasmic sperm injection–involves the injection of a single sperm into each egg, in order to achieve fertilisation resulting in an embryo. This process also allows us to achieve fertilisation and embryos in cases where there are very low numbers of sperm. We are able to select the best morphologically normal sperm.
  • Embryo transfer: after five days growing in the lab the embryos are transferred back into the uterus or, due to advancement in the technique and testing, embryos allowed to reach blastocyst and PGS screening test performed, and embryo frozen on D5/ D6 and later in subsequent cycle embryo thawed and transferred to optimise best chance of pregnancy
  • Post transfer support through vaginal, injectable or oral progesterone and pregnancy tests
  • Bourn Hall Fertility Clinic is staffed with fertility experts, embryologists and nurses, who are leaders in Reproductive Medicine and who guide patients at every stage of their way towards parenthood.
  • Thank you for your interest in our services and we look forward to helping you achieve a happy and healthy pregnancy.
