Varicocele

What is varicocele?

A varicocele is a collection of enlarged veins within the scrotum. Varicocele causes fertility issues if the valves within the testes cause blood to pool within the scrotum. This pooling of blood affects the circulation and temperature of the testes, leading to decreased motility (movement) and poor morphology (shape) of sperm.

How does varicocele affect your fertility?

Varicocele can negatively affect sperm quality.

How can varicocele be diagnosed and treated?

At Bourn Hall, we’re experts in diagnosing and treating varicocele. For example, a ‘varicocelectomy’ is a procedure to remedy large veins within the scrotum. It involves a microsurgical procedure in which swollen veins are tied off while preserving the normal blood vessels. Varicocelectomy is generally a successful procedure and can improve male fertility.
