Endometrial Scratch

A minor scratch to the lining of the womb can provoke a healing reaction which may help an embryo to attach during IVF/ICSI treatment

What is an endometrial scratch?

This is a procedure which involves ‘scratching’ the lining of the womb with a small instrument that is inserted through the neck of the womb.

How does it work?

The ‘scratching’ procedure is simple to perform and does not require anaesthetic. It involves light scratching of the endometrium (lining of the womb) with a soft catheter. Research shows that, in some women, a minor scratch to the lining of the womb can provoke a healing reaction which may help an embryo to attach after implantation.

Who is it for?

An endometrial scratch may be appropriate for:

  • Women who have had previous failed IVF cycle(s)
